This week, Pope Benedict XVI is visiting a country that was officially atheist for a long time: Cuba. A majority of Cuba`s population is Roman Catholic, but the country`s Communist government restricted religious freedom there for decades. It`s something that Pope Benedict mentioned before his visit. Some analysts are wondering if it`ll be part of his message when he speaks directly to the Cuban people.
I`m a religious leader who is elected for life. I`m the head of the Roman Catholic Church, and the world`s smallest independent country, Vatican City.
Cuba was officially atheist until the 1990s, when the constitution was amended and references to atheism were replaced with secularism. Christmas was recognized as a holiday at that time and Communist Party members were permitted to openly practice their faith, if they had one.
Church officials now say the island is about 60% Catholic, though few openly practice.
Still, religious access to state television and the administering of religious schools remain largely restricted, which could be a point of emphasis during the pontiff’s trip, observers say.
Your question: Do you think a country’s government should be able to dictate what religions are acceptable to practice? Why or Why not?

i do not think the government should be able to control religious practices in a country. Restricting religion is unfair to certain cultures and faiths, and violates the basic principles of equality, and freedom of religion. Banning a religion only leads to increased tension and religious conflict. As unstable as places are around the world, doing something like banning faith only makes things worse. Doing so also makes people want to live in your country less, so the country has less people, and earns less revenue.
I do not think that a country should be able to dictate specifically what religion its entire population should follow. They can declare an official religion. but should not discriminate another.

No government should ever have the right to dictate what religions are allowed and what ones aren’t. However, on the flip side, no person’s religion has the right to interfere with someone else’s. Just because you don’t share the same beliefs as your neighbor, it’s not your job to interfere with theirs. The government SHOULD support religious freedom, but crack down on people who try to take away other’s religious freedom in any way.

This is like saying you can’t have this many cloths or something that you really need in life. I don’t think that anyone should be able to tell anyone what to believe. One of the reasons why I think that is that all it does is cause trouble. Meaning that people will begin to protest and maybe what is happening in Syria will happen. I do not think that ANY country should be able to dictate this. I believe so because it is the use of some sort of dictator and I believe this is wrong.

It is not up to the government on witch religion you practice. Those are your views and you can worship who every you want, as long as your not affecting others in a negative way. The government should stay out of religion and focus on other things.
no, its none of the governments business to outlaw peoples religions, the people in Cuba should be able to believe in what they want to believe in, the government should have no control over that.

I do not think a government can dictate a persons religion. That is like dictating there life, you just can’t do that. You should be aloud to express your self through religion, and just be apart of something. And for a government to take something like that away, it’s just not right.
Well of course not. No one should be restricted on religious beliefs, even if they are the craziest things. It’s what they want and have faith in and that, alone, is a good enough reason to have freedom with what you believe in. People should be open to believe what they want to believe.

Like if you live in the United States you should have to practice their religion. Such as other countries have their own religion and I think every country should have to have their own religion or share one. I do not think that a country should dictate the religion of its people, I think that if someone wants to practice a religion, they should be able to. I also believe in a democratic government which allows religious freedom to the people. Also if people keep saying you can’t practice a religion, there is bound to be a revolt on the government, and that can end badly.

I think that every human being in the world has the same rights as the others. Meaning, I do NOT think that Cuba can make its people a certain religion or ban religion. People should all be free to think and be how they want to be. Cubans were still Catholic even though they said they were Atheists. Though they did not practice their religion, they still were that. Now the Pope will go and talk to them about that and what they should do about it.

I think that no matter what you do, people are going to believe what they want so even if you make your country officially atheist like Cuba did, they still will have people who are Catholic. Even if they didn’t let them practice their religion, they probably wouldn’t convert to the national religion.
