Canada’s government has decided to stop making pennies. People can still use them, but the country won’t be minting any new ones. Part of the reason: They cost more to make than they’re actually worth.

Could this make life easier for many Canadians?  Yes.  Could this lead to rounding up and possibly higher prices?  Yes.

A Canadian government statement said New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Sweden and others “have made smooth transitions to a penny-free economy.” It said penny production cost $11 million a year, and that the coins, which feature two maple leaves and Queen Elizabeth II in profile, would remain legal tender until they eventually disappeared from circulation.

  1. I do think that earth day is a important day to celebrate because our planet is getting worse by pollution, waste. I don’t do anything for earth day because I think it will be boring.

  2. i think that wee need them we van give them to people that don’t have anything or we can use it to get a gum ball and if we don’t have them i think that the pries well go up

  3. I think that they need to either be made of something cheaper or go. Maybe they can make it worth 2 cents, and just keep all the money even-numbered in the decimal range. I was thinking that if i can save my penny from 1881, in a while, it will be worth a lot. (For some reason, its not really worth much now. I DO have a silver dollar worth a fair amount, but it was my great-grandmothers, so i wont be selling it anytime soon. And, i just realized i went off topic again.) Anyway, This is a problem, and if they can even lower the cost of the pennies, then we can start to save money. Of course, it will still be spent by Obama, but hey, everyone’s debt wont be going up AS fast……

  4. I thing that the penny should be cut I know that if you cut the penny then people would round up and not down. But cutting the the penny would save every one money in the long run. Also things that are $1.99 are know $2 and that might help people thing before they by something.

  5. I don’t think that we really need the penny. A nickel would work just as good and it would save us money by not making more pennies. The pennies that are already made can still be used as well so i think that it would be better to get rid of them.

  6. I think we should get rid of the pennies because the value of them are really low and know one really uses them. Also we would be saving i think $11 million if we get rid of them. If something is like $2.99 its not that much difference to say $3 that will probably save some money too.

  7. I think they should not stick around because nobody needs them. I don’t think we need them because there is no point in having them. why would you want to have something like 5.99 y not just make it 6 dollars.

  8. Yes I do think that the penny should stick around. They have always been apart of the economy and we should not get rid of them. There is nothing more to say about the topic.

  9. i think we should stop making the penny until our economy gets better. it might help us get out of dept. But for the people that want to pay in exact change.

  10. I think they should keep the penny because you don’t going to know what you are going to need them for.also why i think they should stay around because they have been around for a long time.

  11. I don’t think that we should keep the pennies around because it costs more money to make them than they are worth. The government should keep them in circulation but should stop creating new ones. I never use pennies to pay for things so it wouldn’t really affect me.

  12. Yes, because we still do need them to make exact change. They should just come up with a cheaper way to make them. Pennies should defiantly stick around.

  13. Personally i do not think it really matters If the penny is made and kept or not. Some people use them and some people don’t. Little kids like them for the horse rides at the stores but they are everywhere you walk. You could find them in the parking lot almost anywhere you go without even looking. So the making of pennies could be stopped and we would still have them everywhere.

  14. I would get rid of the penny, this is because i think that it is a waste of money. The penny is worthless it is not need. Penny’s shouldn’t be need for the united states the government should just take out the pennies.

  15. I think that if we stopped making pennies things would start costing more, but i think since people now – a – days don’t really care about pennies, people pretty much disregard them. But you need pennies to make change. Say you buy something and you change is $1.01 you would have a penny for that one cent. Its really a difficult decision on weather to keep the penny of not.

  16. No I don’t think that the United States should get rid of pennies. They are used often and are valuable to people. It also could affect businesses in a way and it would be hard to give or get back change. I think that people will be upset if the government stops making them.

  17. I think that the pennies should be still around. They are good for exact amounts of money. They are also good for collecting.

  18. I think the penny should stick around because it is ours. Cash registers would soon run out of correct change. Pennies are a part of the U.S. We all love to throw pennies around and that is a tradition in the U.S. The penny is cool because it is shiny and can be smelted down for a quick buck. Also, people would lose there job making the penny.

  19. I think that we should get rid of the penny if it will save us money. Not a lot of people care about the penny. If we can save a lot of money by stopping production of the pennies, then I think we should. I mean, just because we stop the production of them, doesn’t mean we have to stop using them. There are still going to be pennies out there. So, why spend 1.6 cents to make 1 cent.

  20. I think that the penny should go, only if we are in the same situation as Canada. Canada is at a point where it’s more than 1 cent to make it. America is having a lot of trouble with money right now, so it is hard to find ways to save money. This might be one of the ways!

  21. I don’t think we need pennies. The only use for pennies is to give people change, for example when they pay with $5 for an item that costs $4.99.I think we would save money by not making them anymore.I always see pennies just laying everywhere and people hate carrying them around.

  22. Pennies are so worthless with things but then again if you have to buy something and its like $12.04 you can just give them like 4 pennies so it will be even and that kind of stuff but thats really the only good thing.. my grandpa use to collect pennies in a giant glass boat and when he died we put all the pennies in the bank for money and there was lets just say ALOT of money so you should save them.

  23. I think that the pennies absence may make it difficult to make change and/or give pin point accurate payments, but the elimination of pennies would make everything a lot easier. You wouldn’t have all that pestering loose change, the annoyance of being paid in pennies would no longer be there, $11 million would be saved a year, etc.

  24. I think that getting rid of the penny is a bad idea. First of all how would the government and companies decide on rounding prices if there is no penny? I think that could cause a problem. Also eliminating the penny would make a nickle more like a penny than a Nickle. Finally it could cause trade troubles because the value of the U.S dollar would be different.

  25. I don’t think that they should get rid of pennies because I think that they’re kind of fun. 🙂 Whenever you find a penny lying around it’s “good luck” to pick it up. And what about the Sandy horses at Meijers?! What’ll happen to them?

  26. I think we need to save pennies because they are more important to our environment. We can save over a thousand pennies and they can add up to over hundreds of dollars. Keep the penny rollin’..

  27. I think that it would hurt the economy because of the taxes and other things like prices on things would have to be in increments of 5’s

  28. I don’t think that they should be discontinued because they are helpful in situations where things need a few more cents. Also if we got rid of them then certain prices would need to raised up. I think we should keep them around because people have been reliant on a few more cents here and there forever.

    • I didn’t look at it like that! I agree that it wouldn’t be very good to have higher prices on products that before costed a few cents less.

  29. I THINK THAT WE SHOULD GET RID OF THE PENNY BECAUSE PEOPLE NEVER KEEP THEM ANY WAYS THEY WOULD JUST THROW THEM OUT IN THE STREET IF THEY WERE IN YOUR POCKET AND I DON’T LIKE HOW IT IS ALWAYS 1.99 WHY NOT JUST 2.00 IT DOES NOT LOOK CHEAPER TO ME.

  30. I think the penny should stick around just for the lulz. It’s not as fun throwing nickels at people and saying “make it rain” when you don’t have any pennies. Pennies have to be the best thing in the world to throw when you are bored. I wouldn’t know what to do with the change I got back after making a purchase. However this would make it awkward for me to give to charity. I give the little jars my change, It just isn’t the same when there isn’t any copper in there. I think you would also lose some jobs if you stop making pennies. KEEP THE PENNY BRO
    #bringplutoandpenniesback

  31. I think pennies should stick around because they are important when buying something. I always like to use exact change to make people mad and the price is always like .73 or something where you have to use pennies. If they didn’t have them then they would have to change all the prices to make them even and that would take a long time.

  32. The penny should stay. Without it, it would make giving back change much less convenient. For the sake of convenience, I say we keep pennies around. We can always change the material inside to make it cheaper.

  33. I think that pennies should be continued because pennies are something that is needed. As long as it does not waste money while making the pennies it seems necessary to keep them in production. Taking away the penny may also be bad for many businesses and their production.

  34. I think that we should keep the penny around. I think this because they come in handy a lot. People use them all the time when they buy things and it makes it easier to pay the tax on things when you buy them. I also think that there should still be pennies because the cost of things would go up to the nearest nickle and no one wants the price to go up.

  35. I think we should keep the pennies around. If we don’t have pennies around it will be hard to give change after buying something without using pennies. Plus people will have to figure out prices for items and how the tax will affect it and to keep the amount from needing pennies. That is to stressful if you ask me.

  36. I think they should not keep them around because it cost more to make them than the penny is actually worth. People really don’t use pennies that much yeah the taxing of items might go higher, but least the company is saving more money a year.

  37. I think that we should keep the pennies because prices on things would have to change. So the penny should stay. Sometimes all you need is a couple pennies to help pay for something.

  38. I say yes and no to keeping the penny around where we live because of quite a few reasons. One reason for yes is because a lot of people collect pennies to have a hobby, and some collections are worth a lot more than they think they are, another reason is because a lot of people have activities that include the penny. One reason for no is because not that many people use pennies anymore, even I don’t use pennies, I just turn them into the tip jar or give it to my parents’ change jar for QuickStar or whatever it’s called, the machine you turn change into.

  39. I think that we should keep the penny. I think this because when you add tax to the cost of what ever you are buying you might get a random number where it would be easier to use pennies to get the total instead of nickles and dimes. Plus people are always finding pennies all over the place and the only reason people pick them up is because they use them and they are worth something.

  40. I think we should keep the pennies. They are worth a lot, it helps people get the exact amount of change and money you put in. If they got rid of the penny, then it would be hard to get $7.87 you couldn’t just put in the exact amount.

  41. I agree that they are useless. if its costing more money to make the pennies than they actually cost then, “why have them”? thats ridiculous i think that pennies are worthless unless you’ve saved them for a very long time.

  42. I think that the pennies should be still around. They are good for exact amounts of money . They also look cool.

  43. I think that we should keep pennies. I think that because then you could not buy most things. How are you supposed to buy something for 57 cents? You are going to need pennies to get that amount. Also with a 6% sales tax that adds 6 cents to an item. You are more than likely going to need pennies or any other change to buy that item.

  44. I think that pennies should stay around. I think this because you use them when something is $2.01. You can also use them for something else.

  45. I think that the United States should get rid of the pennies. They should get rid of all coins except the quarters, dimes, and the half dollar. The Americans have no use for a penny what-so-ever. So if we get rid of them then we save $11 million a year, it might not seem like a lot for the debt we are in but getting $11 million is better than losing $11 million.

  46. I think the penny should stick around because of tax, and exact change. Tax is 6 cents a dollar, so when you buy a pop, you’ll need pennies to pay for it. Also getting change. Getting change for something may have to over pay or under pay the person paying. If they can’t do this make the penny and use less materials to make it.

    • That is one reason I say yes to keeping the penny. Whenever you buy something small like a pop, you could use pennies for it and taxes.

  47. I think that the penny should stay because, it has been around for so long . But we should find a way to decrease the cost of making it, because the cost of making it is more than it is actually worth. It would be a good idea to save money, but bad on the people who actually need it.

  48. I think they should stay so you don’t have to round to up or down. That will keep the prices normal if you keep the pennies. If they don’t the money and prices will be messed up.

  49. I think that they should be getting rid of the penny because why would you want to produce something that is worth less than its cost for making it. It doesn’t make sense. Plus pennies are useless now because everything is so overly priced. All the pennies can buy now is the maybe thirty seconds on the little horse at Wal-Mart. That isn’t a good reason to keep such a low value coin. So I think that they should just get rid of the penny.

  50. I think we should save the pennies because they can come in handy. We can still use them for things that cost something like $8.01. Some people also might save up pennies and those can be equal to a lot of money if it’s saved up long enough. The penny is very important and getting rid of it would make change different.

  51. I think they should keep the penny, because otherwise, everything will start to need to be rounding off in fives. They couldn’t have anything for less than five cents. They should find a way to make the pennies cheaper to make.

  52. Yes they should keep them. Money is money and almost everything thing you buy has cents at the end of the price. Not everybody has dollars some just have change.

  53. I think that the penny should stick around. I think it should stick around because what if you only have a to pay 4.01 how would you get the change if you got rid of the penny. Also prices look better at .99 than they do rounded up.

  54. i fell a sleep i didn’t see CNN just kidding

  55. I do think we should keep the penny. It is part of our history and think it should stay like that. The leave a penny take a penny sometimes helps. Also things would have to be on the dollar which would just waste more cash.

  56. I think that pennies should stay around because every penny counts, you can save up to hundreds of dollars a year just by saving your pennies. I think that pennies are still needed because it all adds up. I think it is also kind of traditional for it has been around for a long time.

  57. I do think the penny should stay in our area. I think this because it wouldn’t make sense to not have the penny. It helps a lot with counting change and getting change. Also its been around forever it would be sad to lose it.

  58. I think we should keep pennies around. They have been part of our economy for so long it would be a big change. We need them for things that are cheap also.

  59. I do think the penny should stay around! I don’t get why it is such a problem. It’s nice to be able to have them when we pay for things that do not cost very much. I think it would take a lot of getting used to if they did get rid of it because it has been around for so long.

  60. i think that they should keep the penny because what if we all throw away our penny’s…….. and something is 6 penny’s how would you buy it !!! exactly you couldn’t point proven.

  61. I think the penny should stick around. DON’T LEAVE ME PENNY! The penny equals one cent, that means to get exact change is much easier. I like the penny, even though it is sometimes a hassle, it allows me to not need change back.

  62. I’m not for or against pennies. I feel like if we got rid of them it would change our currency so much because if you paid for something and got 37 cents back there would be no way to get the extra 2 cents back. There would have to change a lot of things and it would just become confusing. I don’t really think it’s necessary to eliminate pennies.

  63. i need the penny because every penny adds up and i always find them and the are worth something

  64. I think we should keep the penny. But if we need to save money we should not keep it. Most people don’t care about the penny but what will the stores do if they don’t have penny’s and they owe you 3 or 4 cents. It wouldn’t bother me but it might bother some people.

  65. I think we should get rid of pennies. it is a waste of money to make something that is more to make than it is.i think businesses can just round up or down. what will happen to all the pennies if they stop making them.

  66. i think we should stop making the penny until our economy gets better. it will help us possibly get out of some dept! But for the people that want to pay in exact change, that sucks for them.

  67. I don’t think that we really need to keep pennies. Because its just one cent and there’s not a lot that u can do with that. One cent doesn’t do anything but let you ride those little mechanical houses at the store.

  68. I dont really think that the u.s.a should keep the penny because if it cost more to make it then to use it but for stuff that is $7.99 why not just move it up to $8.00 it just seems easier and they make so many penny it seems like more then nickles and dimes and quarters . but even though the 1 cent might make a difference and you lose money.

  69. i think they should totally get rid of pennies. i think this because pennies aree just try hard nickles.

  70. I personally don’t use pennies very much so i would say we should get rid of the penny. The penny is only really used for exact change and the mechanical pony at Meijer. It would also be a cool keepsake when you have a penny and other people don’t.

  71. I think pennies should stick around because they make things seem cheaper. This allows us to buy stuff and have change because if something cost 7.89 you would have to give 4 cents but if we stop making pennies we wont be able to give the money. Pennies should definitely stick around.

  72. I think they should stop making pennies. No one likes them. Kinda like mosquitoes. Why do you think people throw them on the floor? Especially if they cost more money to make than they are worth.

  73. the penny should stick around because having one cent could make a big difference if your don’t have enough to perchus something like if you just happen to have 5.98 and you need one more cent it could help u get somthing

  74. I think that the penny should stick around more. It may seem like it’s worth nothing because it’s only 1cent. In the future, it could buy you something that you never knew saving up pennies could buy you.

  75. I think the penny should stick around because if it doesn’t then things will become more expensive because they will have to go up by increments of five cents instead of one cent. Most companies would make the prices of their things go up instead of going down.

  76. the government should stop making them and we should try not to loose any .we could try and find as many pennies as we can we can save them or use them.we should make less things that take pennies like those machines at the zoo that press the pennies in a new picture.

  77. if it takes more money to make the penny than its worth then there is no sense in making it.

  78. I think that the penny should be kicked out because people don’t really use them anyways. And, people are spending more to make it then to spend it.

  79. I think we should get rid of the pennies because they really don’t have much a of a use in our society. Also if we get rid of them it could save us money and get us out of debt (probably not but you never know). They could just round up things with pennies to even dollars.

  80. I really don’t think the penny is really worth keeping around. But i also think that change is just useless in general. It would make life so much easier to just give people dollar bills.

  81. I think the penny should stick around the United States. In my opinion, Canada made a mistake taking pennies away. If there was no penny would we not get change back if an item was $9.99 and we paid 10 dollars. The U.S. should not take the penny away because of that in my opinion.

  82. Yes i do think we should keep the penny were we live. Because it would make sense to have one cent since we already have one dollar. But if there worried about losing money to make money, then they shouldn’t take away pennies, but they should make another dollar bill that has a $300 or more value to it. We would then be making more money and possibly save the economy.

  83. yes, because they are just a waste of .6 cents with adds up. the government could use that money for something like fried chicken or kool aid.

  84. I do think that the penny should stick around. Just because it would be weird without it. We use it all the time for coin tosses..Honestly I could actually live without it. It wouldn’t bother me. I’d rather use quarters anyway. But I still think that we should keep the penny, it’s the only non-silver colored coin we have.

  85. I think the penny should stick around in the U.S, but It doesn’t make sense to me that the government would spend money on a product that costs more to make, rather than its actual value! I think the government should continue making the Pennies, while they find a way to make the pennies a bit cheaper to make. Or the government also could cut down on the production of new pennies for awhile!..

  86. I think that pennies should stay. Why get rid of them, there money too. Even if it cost a little more to make the pennies, i think we should still keep them, money is money. plus, how are you gonna get the right amount of change back?

  87. I think that we should just get rid of the pennies. We would save a lot more money not making them anymore, and there wouldn’t be any 3.99 it would be rounded up to 4.00. So everything would be easier to pay for. Plus pennies are not really that important, it would be better without them.

  88. Piney s are good because when i need like 3 cent. When i tern my change to the bank it helps allot, like if you are so close to some thing. You mite need that 3 cent.

  89. The pennies should stay because if we stop making them, we might run out of them. The total U.S. population is expanding like crazy, and if they stop the production of the penny, we could eventually run out of them. Also, having the extra pennies gives us a good chance to help others out. My elementary school did the Red-Cross penny drive, where you bring in pennies to help the Red-Cross.

  90. I think that since pennies are more expensive to make than they’re worth, we should stop producing so many of them. I don’t think that we should stop completely, because they can be collected and be worth more money in the long run. Also if we cut down on penny use, the stores could make more money and hire more people to work there. This could create jobs.

  91. I agree Sydney.

  92. I think that they should keep the penny because they do get used a lot. What are they going to do with the 11 million they save though? In some cases it could be worth keeping but other some people think the 11 million sounds a little better. The penny probably gets used the least but it is still important.

  93. Personally I think pennies should still stay in use around the United States. I think this because everything will then be cheaper because it will be a penny less. The reason for this is because a lot of stores round down from a dollar to make the item sound cheaper and convince the person to buy it. This does make sense and I think pennies are worth it. But the down fall is if you go to buy something that is $ 3.99 , I would rather just pay the cashier 4 dollars and not get the extra penny back.

  94. I think the penny should stay because we use penny’s for lots of things like when you buy something and its $2.01 and you don’t want to pay three dollars so you just pull out a penny. The penny was made for a reason so i don’t think we should get ride of it without a reason. when you find a penny on the ground and its heads up it brings you good luck.

  95. Personally i do not think the penny should stay. because im tired of seeing 3.99 it ticks me off. but i feel that i would miss my dear old friend abe. and all the kids being born not knowing that there was ever a penny is sad.

  96. I think it would be a good idea to stop making pennies. The pennies cost more than they’re worth, therefore they are useless. The money that the government saves from this could be used for other things.

    • Yeah i don’t get why the penny is worth 1 cent but takes 1.6 cents to make. It should be worth like 2 cents or something.

  97. I think pennies should stick around just because you wouldn’t be able to give exact change unless everything gets rounded. There isn’t no reason to get rid of them anyways. Pennies have been around for a long time and so i don’t think they should get rid of them.

  98. I don’t think we should keep the penny. I think that if we will save over 10 million dollars from not making the penny we won’t be in so much debt and many our economy will get better. I do think there are some disadvantages to getting rid of the penny, but I think in the long run it will be fine.

  99. I think we need to keep pennies because if stuff is a few pennies cheaper that can add up really fast. You can save your pennies over a few years and you can have a lot of cash. and they can use different elements to make pennies cheaper.

  100. I think they should keep the penny. One reason is because what if your at a store and you get change back and its $1.07 are they going top write you a I,O,U two cents? Or would they have to change all the taxes on stuff so it equals out.

  101. I think they should stop making pennies. Since they cost more to make than they’re actually worth there is no point in continuing to make them. Also a penny is only worth one cent and there’s not much you can do with that anyways.

  102. I do not think the penny should stay. For the fact that its worth only one cent. It only account for 1 hundredth of a dollar. With the price of materials going up and the cost to make new pennies going up they should stop making them and focus on our debt.

  103. I think the penny should stay. How would people get change for the things they buy. I would want to get money back when i give someone a ten and the thing i’m buying costs $7.99. Wouldn’t you?

  104. I think that we should keep the pennies. If they are costing more than they are worth, then we should find ways to make them cheaper. We need to keep pennies so it is easier to pay for something that costs $7.74 and pay it with change instead of wasting a another dollar.

  105. I don’t think that we really need pennies these days. I think that we would all be fine without them, but I do think that we could just keep them and find a new way to make them, so they are worth more than they cost to make, so make the materials different.

  106. I think yes, but no all at the same time. Because it has been a important part in history and it has always been with us all the time. But no, because it cost more to make them then own them.

  107. This could make life a lot easier not having to have exact change but what would they do about tax if it didn’t end up to be a perfect five cents even? They would have to round and it wouldn’t be fair

  108. Yes and no because if we stopped making the penny we would save money. But things would cost a little bit more. Which would not help our economy.

  109. I think we should keep the pennies. You never know when you might need them.

  110. Yes, I think that we should keep pennies around where we live because even though its just 1cent. If you keep all your pennies and keep on collecting more pennies then you might end up with a lot of money after changing it. That could also save a lot of money.

  111. I think the best option is to make new and cheaper pennies. The government could save so much money if they did. I don’t understand why they would still make pennies that cost more money to make than what they are worth. Also it would be weird to live with no new pennies. Eventually all of the pennies would disappear and then we would not have pennies.

  112. Pennies are pretty much irrelevant to me. Although I don’t think they should eliminate the use of them. They can be helpful sometimes with like, getting exact change and stuff.

  113. According to today’s CNN report, Canada’s government has decided to stop making pennies. I don’t think that the United States should get rid of the penny altogether, even though they cost the government, instead they should just use cheaper materials to make them. If we got rid of pennies, stores would start selling things at a slightly higher price because they would need to round up. So if something costs $3.99 it would be raised to $4 and even though it may seem like a small change, overtime it adds up.

  114. I think pennies should be taken away. only because i have a billion of them and someday they may be worth a lot! 🙂

  115. I think the penny should stay. Without it we wouldn’t be able to pay for things that are like a $1.53, unless they also changed the amount something cost as well. But i also think they should find a way to have the production of pennies cost less, so were actually gaining something from making them.

  116. I don’t get why we would continue to make pennies if they are costing us more than we are getting from them. I think we should find some other cheap metal to make pennies if we want to continue to make them and use them. Pennies are not worth much but they do add up.

  117. how does a nickel have anything to do with that haha

  118. I think that they should keep the penny but try to make it out of cheaper materials. It makes no sense to have pennies cost more to make than they are worth. So the government could save lots of money if they find a cheaper way to make the penny. I think its weird to think about not having pennies. It would be difficult to keep all of the pennies in circulations. So i think the best option is to make cheaper pennies.

  119. i think that a penny is a very good think to have all the time in you pocket
in your car and at your house and most of all on the ground for some extra needed
luck for example when you are at the store or a party store when you need 1 or 2 cents they come in very handy. and people dont become millionares when there picky with what money they want.

  120. I think the penny should stay because money is money the penny may be worth less then the rest but it adds up. Like the saying a penny saved is a penny earned if you save your pennies they will add up maybe not fast but they will; also if we get rid of the penny why not get rid of the rest of the cents and dollar bills because we could save money too. Just have everything on credit cards. I think it is pointless to get ride of the penny it is still worth something. A penny saved is a penny earned!

  121. I think that we should keep pennies because then we dont have to break larger bills and such for change that a penny could cover. This could lead to higher prices on gas I think and stuff like that. So I think that pennies should stay.

  122. If pennies cost more to make than they’re worth, they shouldn’t be made anymore. This situation is that simple. If a car company is spending $10,000 to make a car, and selling it for $8,000 dollars, they would have to stop, or the company would go out of business. If a government does the same with pennies, the government would run out of money. Which, by the way, the United States is very much out of money, we’re deep in debt in fact. Perhaps we should stop making pennies, like Canada.

  123. I don’t think that the penny is very important, and I don’t think we need to keep making them. If Canada can save $11 million dollars a year, then I think that we would only be doing good if we got rid of it. Different countries have gotten rid of the penny, and it was a success, I think we could do it successfully too.

  124. I think the penny should stick around because of you have a collection of pennies that can lead up to quite a bit of money. If someone buys something for $5.58 than either they give more money than needed or they don’t give as much money.

  125. I think they should keep pennies around because they are still money. I think they should make them less expensive to make though, then they could still make them. Its as important as any other coin out there.

  126. I think that we should keep the penny because then the prices would change possibly go up for people. Stores use it to make there products look like less money and if we take it away that could affect the prices of the products they sell.

  127. Yes, I think they should keep pennies around. Pennies have been around for such a long time and there’s no reason to get rid of them now. Plus, if we didn’t have pennies we couldn’t pay in exact change unless prices were rounded to the nearest 5 or 10 cents.

  128. Yes, I think that we should keep the penny. I think that because if we don’t have it than the prices of items will most likely raise. So Id think that we need the penny.

  129. I think the penny should stay because even though pennies cost more to make then they are actually worth, many businesses would be affected if the penny was gone. Plus, there are those little rides in the front of stores that cost only a penny but the businesses that make those rides need the pennies to get money. I don’t think we should get rid of the pennies but if we used a cheaper metal then pennies might not be as expensive to make.

  130. I don’t really think it matter if we stop making pennies because yes, it does cost more to make a penny than a penny is actually worth, but pennies are also very useful, and could help people pay for things. The people producing pennies could make the pennies out of something else, which costs less. So either way it doesn’t really matter to me.

    • People will more likely buy something for $7.99 instead of $8.00, so pennies keep our economy flowing more smoothly than if we don’t have them. However they do cost too much money to make so it is a trade off we’ll have to deal with.

  131. No, I do not think that we keep producing pennies because it is just a waste of money. Another reason why i don’t think that we do not need pennies because they usually just make your pockets heavier and they usually just end up on the sidewalk. Lastly if we got rid of pennies maybe all of the prices would be even like… instead of it being $5.99 it would be $6. That makes a lot more sense to me.

  132. I do not care for the penny. It is small and everything cost alot of money now in days. Also i do not use pennies, i think a dime is way better than a penny.

  133. i think that they should stop making them because its costing them a bunch of money to make them. Or use a cheaper metal to make the pennies.

  134. I believe that pennies should be kept around where we live. If they become too expensive, then can’t we make it out of anything else? And plus, we won’t be able to purchase those $.99 items.

  135. I think that we should stop making pennies. This is because its not a very valuable coin and it cost a lot of money to make. Everything should just round up to eliminate the penny and make it easier.

  136. Yes, because pennies are a part of every day life and spending. Things that are a certain price, can be paid equally by pennies. I think it would be a lot more complicated and frustrating to go with out pennies. Even though in Canada t cost s1.6 cents to make a 1 cent penny, and they would save 11 million dollars, I think it would be better to have pennies.

  137. I think we should keep the penny because, its been around for so long. It just wouldn’t be the same with out them. Some ways to safe the pennies are you can sell things for one penny, lots of people would give you pennies.

  138. I think that they should keep the penny around. If it is coasting to much to make they could just find another way to make them cheaper. It would coast to many problems if there is not a 1 cent anymore unless they could just put it on a bill like a dollar bill. Store owners might also lose some profit because they could not have any thing that that another currency could not add up to. So in the long run they might lose profit because they couldn’t have anything that was priced at .99 or 1.99 or something like that.

  139. I think the penny should go. I think people shouldn’t make pennys any more because it costs more to make them then what they’re actually worth. Pennys just aren’t worth making, its a wast of money to make them so we should stop making them.

  140. I think that the penny should go because it cost a lot more for the pennies to be made. They could round up and it would cost people more but it would save the government money. This would save the government so much money.

  141. I think that we should keep the pennies. I say this because say u give someone 5 bucks when you only need to give $4.56, they’d have to pay you back 44c. There’s would only be quarters nickels and dimes to five but those 4c wouldn’t equal out. Also owe might need them in the future and taking them away might make some things harder then they were before.

  142. I think that we should get rid of the penny. It just makes things more difficult than they should be. You have to pull them out of your pocket to pay for the odd priced things. They also make lots of noise and irritate some people. I don’t like pennies because they can also cause health issues. Younger kids swallow the pennies and then they have to go to the hospital because of something that is worth one cent. The bill would be worth more that a million pennies.

  143. I think that the penny should stick. But if the penny costs more to make than it’s worth then I think we should pull a Canada and get rid of it. Also, is the cost of making a penny really accurate? Because of the bad economy the cost of making a penny could be not as accurate as it would in a stable economy.

  144. I do think that the penny should stick around because penny’s will add up. If you keep all of your change that you add up over the years, then you will get hundreds of dollars. They do not have to make new penny’s.

  145. I don’t think that there’s much use of pennies in America anymore. No one likes to use them or carry them around, people find them a hassle most of the time. If were not going to use them then whats the point of wasting the money on making money? We can keep the ones we already have but there’s no need to make anymore if were not going to use them.

  146. I think we should be keeping the pennies because we will need them for extra cents that a nickle, dime, or a quarter won’t be able to do. Also we should be saving pennies for people who don’t have money and need it to feed themselves or there kids.

  147. Canada is good for one thing; their awesome bacon. If they decide to stop distributing pennies, what do I care? As long as I get my bacon, I will be happy. However, I do think that we should keep the penny where we live now, if not only to make things cheaper. The economy is not the best as we very well know, and with out cheaper products, the economy will only get worse. If a penny costs more to make it than it is worth, just make the pennies out of different materials.

  148. I think that pennies should stay because when people need to give change to someone that could give like quarters dimes then a penny too, instead of having to use a whole dollar. And plus with pennies you always could just wrap them up in those things and give them to the bank and trade them for dollars instead. But I really don’t care if they stay or not, so it’s whatever.

  149. I think that pennies should stick around but I think that we should find away to have a lower cost in making them. They should at least save them even if they don’t keep them. You never know, they could come in handy one day.

  150. I think that we should save the penny. i think this way because if we loses them we we loses money. also i fine a lot of them so yah.

  151. I think that we should get rid of pennies but be allowed to still use them. It seems to cost a lot of money to make something that’s worth one cent and pennies don’t really matter to anyone. Some people even throw their pennies away so why make something if it’s just going to end up in the trash.

  152. I think it is not logical to stop, just make them with a cheaper object. If you stop, it would throw all of the prices of objects off. The production of pennies is important.

  153. I think that pennies should stay around because how are you supposed to get exact change or something? Or pay fully for an item? It doesn’t make sense to get rid of the penny.

  154. I think it doesn’t really matter, if you wanted a choice i’d say no we don’t need the penny. Yes it becomes useful but for a couple uses its used, to save up money in a jar, to give for tax, but when it comes down to it, we barely care for the penny. When we see a penny on the ground, most of the time we debate about picking it up because its one cent, unlike a dime which is worth 9 cents more. Its just a small piece of money rarely used so why bother keeping it.

  155. I think pennies should be banished from America. I think this because I never stop and pick up a penny when I see one on the ground. But IF, I see a nickel Ill pick that up alright. You can bet on that.

  156. I think that we should keep the penny because it helps us round up one cent instead of having to get change back if we use a dollar. I also think it should stay around because we wouldn’t want to get rid of something that has been around for years. It would just be wrong to get rid of the penny. As long as the United States doesn’t I think people will be very happy.

  157. I think that the penny should stick around. Because a penny is a big part of my moms life. One time she didn’t get a penny back from walmart and she got mad and searched the parking lot for one and ended up finding 13 cents.

  158. I think that the penny is just wasting our countries money. The penny is worth less than it’s value and is more to make then one cent. I think we should stop making the penny or at least make less of them.

  159. I think we should keep the penny’s because since we are paying more for gas the government or the economy should be able to afford to keep making he penny’s.

    • I agree with the idea that we should keep the pennies because if the government is raising the gas prices then they should have enough money to pay for the making of the penny. Also there are a lot more reasons why the penny should stay in circulation.

  160. I REALLY DON’T MIND HAVING PENNIES OR NOT. IT WOULDN’T REALLY AFFECT ME. HOWEVER, I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS KIND OF DUMB HOW EVERY STORE MAKES THEIR PRODUCTS ONE SHORT. FOR INSTANCE $9.99, IT REALLY SHOULD JUST BE $10.00.

P.S.: IT SAID TO USE CAPS…

  161. I think that the penny should not be kept because they are worth nothing and they are pointless to have. There is no need to have anything worth one cent. If i costs more to make the penny than it is worth we shouldn’t make them.

  162. yes i think it is a good idea that they are pitching the pennies. the reason for this is cause its not worth it to make it when it cost more two make it then it costs.

  163. I believe the penny is virtually useless. But if we got rid of the penny how would we give someone one cent back? That is the major dilemma with the removal of the penny.

  164. i think we should have the penny because if you want to give exact money to the person you can. but i do think they should stop making pennies because i think there is to many.

  165. I don’t think we should get rid pennies because it symbolizes America, and Abraham Lincoln. People that don’t like change can also pay the exact amount of something they buy. The pennies is also a symbol of American currency.

  166. YOUR QUESTION: But it got us all wondering whether you think the penny should stick around where you live. Penny for your thoughts? I believe that the penny is irrelevant, And we could save a lot of money if we stopped making them. Pennys have already been made cheaper but of we stopped making them all together it would be a very wise choice.

  167. The penny should be eliminated because it’s sustenance is financially detiorating the United States, costing us millions per year. If the penny were to be eliminated, the prices of items should be altered as well. For example, a necklace that used to cost $99.99 should then cost $99.95 so a nickel can be used to fully purchase the item.

  168. I personally don’t like the penny. It seems useless and I would rather just use dollars. It’s just easier to pay for stuff with dollar bills then any coins.

  169. I don’t think we should keep the penny. Not a lot of people really use it anymore. They said we would save like $11 million dollars or something? So, that would be really good to have. If something is $2.99, it really isn’t that much of a difference to $3. So, if it saves us too, that would be a benefit. It also said that it costs more to make the penny, than it is worth? It doesn’t make sence. You might as well not even make them then.

  170. I do not think the production of pennies should be stopped. Pennies are an important coin and although they may not be used all the time, they are still important. Since pennies cost more than they are worth, maybe there could be a cheaper material that they could be made of.

  171. I think that it is stupid to get rid of the penny because what do u do when you have to pay 6.36 your not going to give them 6.40 or 6.35 so i do not understand what they think it is going to do for them selves.

  172. I think that we should keep the pennies because you wouldn’t get the right amount of change if you were buying something unless taxes go away, but that will never happen. The stuff that people will buy will look like the prices got higher. So i think we should keep the pennies.

  173. I think that it doesn’t really matter whether or not we keep producing pennies. I always find them all over my house anyways. If it’s better for the economy and it’s such an irrelevant coin than what’s the point of continuing?

  174. I think that pennies should go. If they are not even worth the amount that takes to make them, why keep making them? The penny is not even used often, yes to make the total of a bill equal when you pay but most people these days use cash and credit cards. But on the other hand, if they do take the penny away stores and restaurants should start making their prices solid numbers not like $7.99, because that’s when you get a penny back when using cash, which you don’t really need.

  175. I think that the biggest affect of not having a penny would be true prices. For example, the cost of many items are brought down by one penny to make them seem cheaper when really they are not. It would also save clutter which would be nice. To address the counterargument that some people have mentioned, Carl said that you could still use the pennies that you own just the national mints would stop making them so you wouldn’t loose any money.

  176. I do not think that the penny should stay as a part of our currency. The penny dose not really do anything, it takes up space and it stresses me out. I think we should ban the use of the penny. It just dose not work for me.

  177. I defiantly think the penny should stick around because it seems pointless to me that you can still use them but they’re not going to make anymore, what happens when you run out of pennies? I think pennies are very useful even though they are one cent they are helpful in many different ways.

    • I think the pennies should stay also, just because you stop making them doesn’t mean they’re going to last forever. They will eventually disappear so we need to keep making them.

  178. I think that if we didn’t make pennies anymore it would save a lot of money, but pennies can be useful and make paying for things a lot easier. If you look at it from the governments point of view it doesn’t seem like a bad idea to get rid of them because our country is already in debt and there is no major reason when we should keep making pennies. They cost a lot of money to make and we could use that money to put toward something else more useful.

    • I agree, if you put yourself in the Gov’t. spot you would see why they are going to do this. They have a lot of stress on them, and if they have they stop making pennies, they can save money.

  179. I think pennies should still stick around the United States. I think this because everything will then be cheaper because it will be a penny less! The reason for this is because a lot of stores round down from a dollar to make the item sound cheaper and convince the person to buy it! This does make sense and I think pennies are worth it.

  180. I think the penny is genuinely useless. But most people know the saying ‘A Penny for your thoughts’ or ‘Find a penny have luck for a day’. I think those would be hard to put like a nickel or quarter in. I mean would you really say, “Quarter for your thoughts?” No you wouldn’t because you’d sound really stupid. While the penny doesn’t have any face value, I think that it would be good to keep around just because of those sayings and that they have cool pictures on them.

  181. I think that the pennies should stay but be restricted on amounts and old pennies should be turned into new pennies. they should make pennies but they should find another object to represent 1 cent that only costs a cent instead of 1.6 cents. i also feel that if we needed to we could take the pennies out and make merchandise more even to the nickle.

  182. Yes I think that the penny should stick around in the US but we should change it for it to cost less. Possibly the size or a less detailed or usage of the resource to create the penny. That way if we make it cheaper we could save more money or even make money.

    • Those are really good thoughts. If making pennies cost less, then we could keep making them and not lose money.

  183. I think stopping the penny is a good thing. If the country is losing money making it then why still have it. Also i think rounding an item to every 5 cents would be a good thing. And advertising for items and food will be worse, like instead of seeing 5.99 you’ll see 6.00 and you might not want to buy it. So in the end losing the penny will save money and fatness will decline.

  184. I think we should keep pennies because they are needed to make exact change and are an important part of spending. Getting rid of them would cause stores to choose to round up to higher prices and people are already having a difficult enough time paying for things as it is. Pennies may not seem like much money by themselves, but they can be saved up along with other change which all adds up. They are worth keeping because of exact change and the existing inflated prices already in stores.

  185. I think we should keep the penny. yes it is only worth one cent but how is someone going to give you the exact change back if we don’t have a penny?

  186. I think if we stopped the production of pennies in America it would make paying for things harder, and it may effect some savings. Although pennies are worth very little , they do make for good savings for little kids and they help us keep exact change to keep our bills. I really could care less about the penny, but if it costs us more money to produce them than they’re actually worth, it makes no sense to keep them in production.

  187. I think that it’s a good thing that the government is getting rid of the Penny. I believe that they are useless nobody is going to walk into a store with a jar full of pennies and buy something. It just has no use. I have never used a penny to buy anything so why keep them.

  188. I think the government should keep making the pennies. I say this because they have been in our country for so long that it will harm everyone if they took them out of society. Pennies are important and make things easier when change is being counted. Even though businesses say that they want to keep the pennies to make thing look cheaper than they really are, i think we still should keep them.

  189. I think the pennies should go. We’ve been talking about losing the penny for years but nothing has happened. I believe the United States will lose the penny next year because Canada will do so well with out it. I don’t care if the store owners are upset if they want to make an $8.00 product look cheaper then make it $7.95.

  190. Kick the penny, why not? Businesses are tricking us anyway with the 7.99 trick. Look at these two as say which looks smaller: 7.99 or 8.00. I think everyone will say the 7.99. This all comes down to cost. If not kick the penny, make it out of a cheaper metal. It all will work out in the end though.

  191. I don’t think the US should keep minting new pennies. They cost more than they’re worth, and aren’t a very useful currency. Mostly they are used in receiving change back from your purchase, but maybe if we eliminated the penny slowly, prices would be rounded to more compatible number.

  192. I think the penny needs to go, i honestly never use them and i always get them back in change and it gets very annoying. And the government needs to be saving as much money as possible right now, considering the debt.

  193. I think that the penny should not be made anymore. I think this because it would save the government lots of money because it costs more to make the penny than it is actually worth. If you are making something and selling it for less then you make it for you are going to loose a lot of money.

  194. I think the subject should be tested to see how much money would be saved in the United States if the penny is removed. If removing the penny saves money, then it would be a good idea to remove the penny. With a massive national debt, saving money by removing the penny would be a good idea.

  195. I think we should get rid of the pennies because we don’t really use them. We should be able to use the ones we still have now. Instead of throwing away money. Honestly if something is $5.99 people pay $6. Nobody counts out exactly 99 cents. But that is my opinion on the penny debate.

  196. I think that if they are loosing money on making the penny they should get rid of it. If they continue to make the pennies and they cost 60% more to make them then they are worth, they will become more and more in debt. About the store owners saying that 7.99 looks cheaper than 8.00, all they have to do is make it 7.95 and that makes it look even cheaper and your problem is solved.

  197. I think the penny should definitely stick around because since the economy is going in the direction it is people will start giving exact change for what they buy. There are many people out there who are struggling and having a lot of pennies will definitely add up in the long-run. So in my opinion we should keep the penny.

  198. I think that people really don’t need to penny’s as much as they do other coin’s, but i don’t think that they should completely stop making the penny’s but just not make as many of them.

  199. I do not think that Pennies should be kept around because they are not worth that much and they are only 1 cent and they can not get you far 100 pennies is a dollor and there is a bill for that 500 pennies is $5 there is a bill for that why should we keep them around they are not that important to the world unless you collect pennies witch i doubt a lot of people do. I just don’t think they are worth it and they cost more to make then what they are worth.

  200. I believe that the penny should stick around where i live.the reason for that is because some things like fruits cost a certain amount of money like for instance a apple or what not would cost $1.53 if there was no penny’s where are you going to pay for the apple.

  201. I want the penny to stay where i leave. It doesn’t have any real value, but when you were a kid you would ride those rides that were 1 cent and they were a lot of fun. But i could also see them not being around anymore because of the low purpose of the penny.

  202. I think they should keep the penny around. How else would we make exact payments or change? We couldn’t! The only way removing the penny would work is if they used rounding instead of exact change. But that’s not a good solution because for costumers, they could be “ripped off” and it would affect business owners either. Like they said, $7.99 looks a lot better then $8.00

    • Yes! I agree! Also if we did not use pennies anymore then it would take a lot of people to adjust to this and making a item a cent less seems totally worth it to some people!

  203. What is the big deal about pennies? If it saves our country eleven-million a year then I say get rid of them. I never use them to pay for anything. The only thing that i do with pennies is put them into a piggy bank and save them up. At least till i get like twenty-five dollars.

  204. I think that they should stop making pennies because there more money making them then the pennies them self. I could see why they would want to keep making them but why spend more money then you really have to .

  205. I think that if it cost more to make the coin then it is worth then they should stop making new ones. It would save them 11 million dollars. People don’t really use them as much anymore. Most people use dollars or credit/debut cards now.

  206. We should keep pennies.Witch things becoming more pricey, we need all we can get. Besides, everyone used pennies. If you have a total of 5.67$ And you give then 5.70$ what are they supposed to give you back?

  207. I think its a good ides to get rid of the penny. With the value of the penny being so low I dont blame them. If it costs more to make the penny then there really is no point in having them your just putting your self in debt. But my question is what do you do with the pennies after they arnt being used as much. People arnt gonna want them.

  208. i dont think a penny matters that much it would make it easier to just get rid of the penny so we could save money why spend more money to make less money getting rid of the penny will be a good idea.

  209. I don’t really see the point in a penny anymore, and its not even worth its actual value! And most people don’t use pennies and they just toss them around. They don’t have much worth anymore in this economy we are in nowadays.

  210. YOUR QUESTION: But it got us all wondering whether you think the penny should stick around where you live. Penny for your thoughts? WHY OR WHY NOT? 3-5, CAPS, SPELLING & GRAMMAR…..YOU GUYS!

I feel that the penny should stick around because its original. I still know of some people who use pennys’ for when they’re in a bind. I feel it should stick around forever.

  211. I think that the penny should stay. We could try to find a way so that it would cost less when we make it. But i think it should stick around.

  212. I think the penny should not stick around where I live. The penny doesn’t have much value to it and i don’t think it matters if we just have one penny. Also we can’t really buy anything with one cent.

  213. I don’t think that the penny should stay. If it costs more to make it, then they should stop production of it. It costs 1.6 cents to make it, and it is only worth 1 cent. We are wasting money on something that we barely use, so we should just ditch the penny.

  214. I personally think that the penny should stay because everyone I know uses pennies to get the right amount of change. It would be impossible to get the right amount of change with out a penny unless they changed all prices of items or took of taxes which would never happen.

  215. I think that the penny should at least stay in circulation. It would actually help make american currency worth more, if we were to stop minting it. With fewer pennies exchanging hands. It is my opinion that this nation prints way too much money that we need to. If we were to print less money, then the value of the dollar would increase much more than it is now.

  216. The Penny has got to go. Is getting 3 cents back really saving you that much, I think it would just be easier to pay with a nickle and give them a small tip. It will be a slow transition to the one day to when all currency is digital. Plus creating any more money will cause inflation and lower the value of the currency as a total.

    • I agree, although this change would take a while for everyone to finally adjust too it!! Also America would be saving more money in the long-run.

  217. I think pennies should stay since it costs more to make a penny than its actual face value,it would seem easier to stop producing pennies, but rounding change would cost more than producing them.

  218. I think the government should keep making pennies where I live because when we no longer make pennies, the prices of things are rounded up. Instead of something being $1.99 it would be $2.00, which sounds a lot more expensive to people. I also do not think the mint would actually save that much money, instead of using the $11 million dollars to make pennies they would still use that money to make more quarters, nickles and dimes.

  219. I think the subject should be tested to see how much money would be saved in the United States if the penny is removed. If removing the penny would cost more from rounded prices, than it would not be a good idea. If removing the penny saves money, then it would be a good idea to remove the penny. With a massive national debt, saving money by removing the penny would be a good idea.

  220. i think the penny should stay because you wouldn’t be able to get the right amount of change back. what if you bought an Arizona for 99 cents, it just wouldn’t feel right to not get a penny back.

  221. I think that the penny should stick around, but sense pennies are only 1 cent people don’t really have use them much. Every year people throw away about 9 million dollars in pennies! So if people are just throwing them away then we shouldn’t keep it.

  222. i think they should keep the penny around only if they can lesson the cost of making it. if making the penny costs more than the final price its production should be stopped because we shouldnt spend more creating it then it is actually worth.

  223. I think that the penny should stick around because its been around for so long and we should still have it. If we didn’t have the penny and we bought something for one cent then how would we get paid back if we gave them only five cents.

  224. i think it is a good idea to get rid of the penny if it is costing more money to make then it is actually worth. I think Canada will be the first of many country’s to get rid of the 1 cent piece. it wouldnt make sense to keep making something that is costing your country more money to make then it is actually providing it.

  225. I think we should because everything you may buy cost something and the use of penny’s are used every day. How are we suppose to pay for something that’s $6.28. we don’t have a 3 cent penny. It would also be good for the government because it would save the economy money.

  226. I think that the penny should stay because if you buy something that has tax on it, they would have to round it up and it might be 3 to 4 cents more for the product. It would be okay if they stopped making them because we still have them all around the U.S. I think that its crazy how they can spend more money on making the pennies then they are really worth.

  227. I don’t think the penny should be around because to make a penny it costs about five cents to make. Or we can just quit producing change all together and make everything a solid amount.

    • yeah but a lot of time change really matter to use i mean then they’d have to make an exact amount for things instead of like 13$ and 10 cents ya know. they’d have to make it just 13$ so i don’t think that’d work.

  228. I DON’T THINK THAT THE UNITED STATES SHOULD GET RID OF OUR PENNY. IT IS A VITAL PART OF OUR CURRENCY TO MAKE EXACT CHANGE AND HAVE A MORE EXACT PRICE. PLUS IF THERE WAS NO MORE PENNY YOU COULD DO A 6% TAX EXACTLY SO WHAT DO YOU THINK THE GOVERNMENT WOULD DO, THEY WOULD MAKE IT 10% NOT 5%, BECAUSE YOU CANT MAKE 6 CENTS WITHOUT AT LEAST ONE PENNY AND A NICKEL.

  229. I don’t think that we should keep the penny. For Canada to get rid of it it makes sense because they are spending more money to make it then it is actually worth. I wonder in the U.S. if they stopped making the penny, how much money would the country save?

  230. I think we should continue making pennies. If they stopped making pennies, it would save them money, but stores would have to round up on their prices, which would cost us more money, and sometimes pennies are just a handy thing to have around.

  231. I think that we should keep the pennies because if we didn’t have the penny than the prices on things will look a lot higher than they really are. Having that extra cents on something makes it easier to pay when you have pennies. A lot of things would change if we took away the penny sense it’s been around for so long.

  232. I think the penny should stay in the U.S.
The reason being…it makes things SEEM like they are cheap. If you have a product that is $2.99 it seems much cheaper than a product that is $4.00. If it seems cheaper, more people will want to buy that specific product.

  233. I think that the penny should stay. People still pay with cash and coins so unless they get rid of all of the bills and other coins i think it should stay. When stores are putting prices on their items they can make it an odd amount like $0.57. If they took away the penny then it would be impossible to give change back. The stores would have to reprice every item in the store. Getting rid of the penny would make paying with cash much more difficult.

  234. I think the penny should stick around because i wouldn’t know what to do without it. It has always been the lowest and seemingly most plentiful coin of all the coins that are made by the U.S. It does cost more than its worth and I am sure that if we discontinued it we would save a lot of money, but what would happen to all the coins?

  235. I think the penny should stick around, but to compromise we should make less pennies. If we stop making pennies completely prices might go up, but it would save the government a lot of money. Therefore, I think making less pennies would be a good solution for this.

    • That’s a good point. Making less pennies would decrease the amount of spending for its production but we still need the pennies to make exact change.

  236. I really don’t think that making pennies is effecting the economy that much that we would need to get rid of them or stop making them. If the penny is really that expensive to make then they should have stopped minting them a long time ago. Raised prices as a result of this would just make things even harder for the average American to pay for, in my opinion there are much more important things to be worrying about than whether or not to continue minting pennies.

  237. I think that we should keep pennies, but we should find a cheaper way to manufacture them. If we found a way to manufacture pennies with a cheaper kind or material they wouldn’t cost as much. Also if we didn’t have pennies how are we going to pay for or receive the change? Would they just round the dollar amount up?

  238. I think that we should save the pennies and keep making them. People still use pennies all the time so i think that we should wait at least 10 more years before we decide to stop using the pennies. Also if we stop using the pennies it is going to hurt and seriously affect people’s business’s.

  239. I believe that the government should probably stop making pennies. For a couple reasons. 1) It will save money because it costs more to make it then it is worth, 2) the value of a penny will go up meaning you can sell it for more because it’s rarer. And 3) prices would be easier because they would be rounded to the nearest 5 and they would not be a fraction of a penny.

  240. I think the pennies should stay, but we should come up with a cheaper way to make them. We could make them out of things that are just cheaper in general. Also, how we make them is an important factor. The types of machines and things that are used like that could, somehow, be different.

  241. I think the penny shouldn’t be continued. if you round your prices to the nearest five cents there would be no use for them except for the taxes. if the government could save money why continue something that’s not necessary? i mean we don’t really use pennies you cant get anything with a penny anymore.

  242. I think the pennies are not only useful when change amounts come out to a number other than a 10 or 5, but they represent wishes, childhood memories, and good luck. The penny is a symbol of America, let’s keep it!

  243. I think that the penny should be eliminated. I feel this way because it is such a low value and has hardly any worth to a consumer. That is why you constantly find them on the ground and in tip jars- nobody wants or cares about them. If they do eliminate the penny, then I think that stores need to make the cost of goods round evenly to the nearest 5 cents. That way, there is no need for pennies. For penny collectors, this would be great because all of their pennies would go up in value.

  244. I think that the penny is an unimportant coin nowadays. There isn’t much 10 pennies can do for you in this day and age, let alone one penny. If the government spends more money making a coin than that coin is actually worth, it’s wasting money, in my opinion, and we don’t exactly have a lot of money to spare. The penny is symbolic, but not very important.

    • I DISAGREE WITH YOU. YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PENNIES. I DON’T LIKE IT WHEN YOU POST STUFF THAT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE. THE GOVERNMENT CAN SPEND ALL THE MONEY THEY WANT WHY DO YOU CARE?!?! STAY OUT OD THEIR BIZ BRA

    • I agree, they are just wasting money making something no one’s really going to use…

  245. I think that the penny should stay. I think this because it is going to be weird without it. A lot of studies in school are also done in 1st grade where the penny, nickel, dime, and the quarter are used a lot, especially in math. To keep it just make it out of cheaper material.

  246. I think they should stop making them because if we are losing money to make almost worthless pennies I don’t see the point. we can hand them down one day and there is plenty to keep going for years. That will also make things not $6.99 or $99.99. its pointless that way I think because we round.

  247. I think pennies can be useful yet annoying. they can be useful because you never know when you are going to exactly need them. It may just come down to you needing that last little cent. They can be annoying though because they are just loose change falling around in your pocket.

  248. I think it would be a good idea to stop making pennies. If they cost more than they’re worth, and for the most part are useless, the money being used to make them could be used elsewhere. Prices could increase due to this, but all prices rise eventually and in time it would probably even itself out, so why not just start now?

  249. I think that we should stop making the penny. It would save the U.S a lot of money that could be used for more important things like education or repairing roads. Company would have to round everything by 5 cents up or down but that would not make to big of a difference on most things. It would also make it easier to keep track of money.

  250. I think Canada made a smart move by stopping producing pennies. If this saves them about 11 million dollars per year, which they can use for important things, it makes sense why the penny can’t stay. Especially in this economy crisis the world has been having.

  251. If it’s too costly to make something that we hardly use now a days, I say, stop making them. Let them be something rare, if it ever comes to that, so that more money is spent flying around the pennies that eventually, you’l hardly be able to find ever again. Besides, who really uses pennies anyway? Besides charity or tips?

  252. I think that we should keep the penny because I think its as important as any other coin. If they run out then there could be problems returning change under 5 cents. I don’t think its a good idea to stop making them; If they are expensive make them out of material that is less than the cost now.

  253. I think that we should not stop making pennies completely. We should slow down the making of the pennies but not stop. You never know if you are going to need a penny but usually you will use them often. Also, if the total was $7.99 and you give them $8.00 how will they give you your change back if they stop making pennies? I don’t think they should stop producing pennies completely.

  254. I think that if the U.S. stopped making pennies, it would not have a large impact on peoples lives. It would make for faster purchases that would normally be slow because people were looking for pennies to pay with. I also don’t think pennies are very important because they just build up over time because I don’t spend them.

  255. I think that they should keep the penny. You can use it for exact change and it is just a different value of money. We have a bigger range of what we can use and I don’t think it would be worth it to stop making them.

    • I disagree because nobody cares about pennies. That is why you always find pennies on the ground. Someone will take the time to pick up a nickel, but not a penny.

  256. yes i think pennies should stick around we do use them they make a difference when your shopping or when your in smaller stores like the ones were they live that little tray out so you can put pennies in it.

    • I would miss those, and all of the machines used to donate spare change to foundations would be more scares due to that people would not want to use anything greater that a nickel so the penny would be their optional choice

  257. I think that they should keep making pennies. If they stop making pennies some people won’t be able to use them for what they do on a normal basis. Like what if you pay on exact change. And then if there’s no pennies left, you can’t. They should still make them but maybe not make as many as they used to.

  258. I don’t think the penny should be around still. The cost of a penny is more than it is actually worth. They need to have a different amount of coin to surmount the costs of the penny. The more pennies there are, in reality, will be more money the government and nation will be losing.

  259. i think it would be allot easier if we got rid of the penny because then everything could be in increments of 5 cents and would be easier to count; pennies cost more to make then they’re worth. so i think we should give it up to save us time and money.

  260. I don’t think that we should continue to make pennies. They cost more than they’re worth, which causes us to lose money. A penny doesn’t even mean much to most people, so I don’t think anybody would mind getting rid of them. The extra money we have a year can also be spent on something else that could get us further.

  261. I don’t think that the penny should stick around. Our economy is bad enough so the fact that we’re making a one cent penny for 1.6 cents isn’t helping at all. If we stop making the penny, maybe we’ll gain more money for the U.S. economy to use for creating jobs and such.

  262. i think the penny should stick around because it has been round for so long and it is a great piece of american heritage.

  263. I think we need to keep pennies, without them how would people make change? If i were to buy something for 99 cents and I give the person a dollar am I just not going to get my money back? We have to keep the pennies around so people can make change easier.

  264. I don’t think we should keep the penny. Based on how much one person would use it daily, it is not much. Most people would either pay with cash and get the change back. Most just pay with Credit/Debit card and would need cash or change. I think it is a waste of resources and not worth the money to make them.

  265. I do not think that we should keep the penny. It would save the government a lot of money to help with our debt or for schools, whatever the government can think of. those are some of the reasons why i think we do not need to keep the penny.

  266. I think that Canada has done the right thing by stopping penny production. This will save them money and the deteriorating penny collection some people have. If the U.S. were to do this they would have extra money to spend on something that needed most.

  267. I think that the government should quit making pennies. They are costing a lot of money to make. The penny is not even made of all copper because we can’t afford it.

  268. I see no real point in keeping pennies around in the US. No one uses them, and it would be nice to save our country a little money. As for products seeming more expensive, my family has always seen anything 7.99 as 8.00 anyway. Americans just don’t have a use for pennies anymore.

  269. i think that it doesn’t matter whether we get rid of the penny or not. it would indefinably save many but it would lead to higher prices. many countries have done this but why now no country has done it recently but it might work for them but it is all up to the government to choose.

  270. Well i think the penny’s should stay because it is going to make a few things change , like some stores for instance McDonald’s. It is 1.06 for any thing from the dollar menu. How would you be able to pay that with out a penny. It would raise prices just a tad because there wouldn’t be allot of them left.

  271. I think we should stop making them until we start to run out, because there is a huge overflow of them, and it would save the U.S. a lot of money. I can’t tell how many times I’ve seen or found a penny just laying around somewhere, and that shows there is an overflow of them. We could last a while until they we started running out, and then when we do we can just pick up making them again.

  272. I think that we should get ready of them. I say that because to make a penny is more to make it then what it’s worth. Also not many people pay in chains. Most kids us it because they don’t have any bills so they us penny’s and other change that they have in there cars. So they just need to stop making them. So if things cost $1.99 just make in $2.00.

  273. No i don’t think we should keep making the penny because it cost us $11 million a year and that not worth it. Without the penny we would save so much money but then there would be higher prices but we would have $11 million each year. Also another good reason to stop making the penny is because no one cares about one cent so i think its a good idea to stop making the penny.

  274. I think that they should keep making new penny’s because there going to run out because people keep change and little kids keep penny’s for their piggy bank. If they do stop making penny’s its not like the worlds going to end there’s still old ones.

  275. I think that the penny should definitely stay because it’s easier to use when you’re buying something and it’s like .76 so you’d pay with 3 quarters and a penny, and have perfect payment. They’re just always good to have around when you need them. It’s just always something convenient.

  276. I don’t think we should have penny’s. I think this because if you walk around you will find a lot of penny’s laying on the ground. No one cares if you loose a penny. it also cost a lot to make a penny. It would be cheaper to get rid of them.

  277. I think it would be fine to stop making the penny in Canada. It’s saving them money so I don’t see why that would make people mad if they stop making the penny. Everyone can still use all of the pennies they have so it’s not like they are outlawing the penny and you lost like 10 dollars in pennies.

    • I agree. But I’m not stoppin theeerrrre!! People have to suck it up. Pennies are pennies. You never use them anyway. They’re just weight in your wallet. I say sucks to the pennies! (LOTF reference)

  278. i think that the penny should not be stopped because it would be inconvenient to stores. they use $7.99 instead of $8.00 because it makes it look cheaper, which they couldn’t do without pennies and people getting change back wouldn’t be able to get the right amount sometimes.

  279. I think that we should still have pennies. Like if you have something in the store that is .59 then you would use pennies to pay for that. I think that it is a bad thing to get rid of pennies. I think that some prices would go up if we didn’t have pennies.

  280. I think the penny should stick around because you do not know that if you save your penny it can help you but people think that a penny is a penny but if they save up the penny it is more than a penny.

  281. No I think that we don’t need to have penny’s because we can just save a little bit of money and not make penny’s and just have nickles dimes and quarters.I think that we can just stick with the other stuff because that way or country saves money and we may get / have a better economies. The thing that many people will have against this would be when they get change back and how would they do it if they had 12 cents to get back how would they get the two cents that is the only question i would have on this.

  282. I think that the penny should go, having a bunch of pennies in your pocket just weighs you down. Id rather pay eight bucks than rather have to deal with the change if the change isn’t in quarters ill leave it. If we take out the penny it will save 11 million dollars a year which would help the economy.

  283. Well if making the penny loses you money then there is no question and of course we should stop making the penny. What is the point of making money if the money cost more than what its worth? There are many other coins out there like the dime, nickel, or quarter and there are even more. Stopping the production of the penny will save on average 11,000,000 dollars a year, so it wouldn’t hurt to stop making it.

  284. I think it would be a good idea to get rid of the penny because it costs so much more to make. But I do not think we should get rid of it. Many prices in stores would round up and there would be higher prices.

  285. I think that in the United States the penny should be removed. The penny is such a small and useless piece of change. I know that I dislike having to carry around a bunch of pennies in my pocket just so i can pay and extra penny when we can just round up/down by the fifth cent. In my opinion i also do not think that pennies make that much of a difference, and if we removed them life would be normal. People could trade in their pennies for dollars at a Coin-star and then we wouldn’t have to worry about any more pennies.

  286. thankfully its just Canada but getting rid of the pennies i cant imagine because we use them so much although this means the price of copper will go down, well no more canadian peneis

  287. I think that they should get rid of the penny. I say this because if it takes more money to make to make the money you should get rid of it. Also i think it would go better with out penny’s.

  288. I don’t think pennies should stay around, because people hardly use the penny so i think it’s a waste of money. It cost money to make money so to waste money on one cent that know one hardly uses seems pointless to me. I also think they should get rid of the $7.99 and just make it $8 because it’s just stupid your saving one cent.

  289. No, i do not think they should stick around. I think they are pointless because when I go to a store I never hand the cashier forty six pennies, i hand her nickles, and dimes. I think pennies are just a waste of money.

  290. I think that we should still use pennies here because for instance, if you have something in a store being $5.99, how would yo be able to get change back for that if there were no pennies? Most likely the owners of that store would raise the price up a penny to $6.00. We should still have pennies also for the little fun things we used them for as a kid, like wishing wells, and those fun thing you would put the penny in and it would go around in a circle until it went in the hole at the bottom.

    • I think that some of the prices would go up like in gum or something without pennies!

    • I disagree because it costs more to make the penny than what it’s worth. So what if you’re one cent off from your payment? We’re more worried about the U.S. economy than a $5.99 item at the store.

  291. I don’t really think that not keeping the penny would effect me much, because I rarely use pennies. I think that its just a waste of money even making the pennies, so I think we should just stop making them and save the money for better use. So no I don’t think the pennies should stick around.

  292. Yes I do think the penny should still be around, because without the penny we wouldn’t be able to give people exact change back because they don’t make them anymore there’s a lot of reasons they shouldn’t stop but that’s the main reason

  293. I think that they shouldn’t stop making pennies. If they stopped making pennies then the prices of things would be higher because you would have to round up more. Not making them might save $11 million a year but its gonna cost us more money.

  294. I think they should keep making pennies. Because it’s apart of currency just like the nickle or dime, saving money is a good thing, but I think the prices of things will go up because of one less piece of currency. And it could be a good thing to because the cost of how much a penny would be worth would go up so people could start selling their pennies and making money off of that too. But in my case, I think they should still make pennies.

    • i agree. Saving money is good because u can use it in the future.

    • Yes prices will go up, But only by about 1 cent. like if something is $24.99 it would be $25.00 instead so its not a huge difference so i don’t think there is anything to worry about.

  295. I think we could live without pennies because they are basically worth nothing today. Back then, you would need pennies because the prices on things were much cheaper than today. When i buy something, i rarely get any pennies or give them away to pay for something.

  296. I think penny’s should stay around. I think that because people save up penny`s and use them to buy different things. Like people say every penny counts.

  297. I think that if it cost more to make the coin then it is worth then they should stop making new ones. People don’t really use them as much anymore. Most people use dollars or credit/debut cards now. It could save us more money if we stopped making new pennies because it takes more to make them then they are worth.

  298. Its hard to say if we should still use the penny, but i think that its important in forms for money, but there are certain places like school, that wont take penny’s?

  299. Yes, I believe that the penny should stick around where we live. Of course, if it is too expensive to produce, the government should get rid of them. The pennies are another coin that can be used to pay for things, so therefore we should keep it.

  300. I think think they should stay around. It does cost more to make but prevents higher cost and higher looking prices. If we don’t have pennies it will raise cost of many things.

  301. I don’t think they should keep the penny. It cost more to make it than what it is worth so obviously they should get rid of it. Besides Abe Lincoln has his face on the 5 dollar bill to so it’s all good.

  302. Yes its needed to help buy things where we live I don’t know how many times I have need a penny. If the US government was going to stop making them it would not be good.I think maybe making them cheaper to make would help.

  303. I think we should stop making pennies because it would probably save us a lot of money. I don’t think we need pennies that much anymore and since our government is in debt, it could help us earn some more money. Most people only get pennies from change when they pay with a larger bill so really, we don’t need them

    • You just hate pennies. i do not agree with you at all. You should rethink and post again. LOVE YOU MEL MEL

    • I would have to disagree with you Mel Mel, how could you dis those pennies. They have been around for so long they should just keep them….MELANIE

  304. I think the u.s should stop making new pennies. If its costing us 11 million a year then we could really be saving a lot of money or putting it towards something else that’s useful. But just because we stop making new ones, shouldn’t mean we have to stop using them.

  305. I don’t care if we keep the penny or not. I think that the penny is just another waste of money because people don’t use the penny anymore. So if i had a choice to keep it or get rid of it, I’d probably get rid of it because all the pennies are doing is wasting money.

  306. No, we should completely abandon the penny. If it costs more to produce something than it is worth, then its basic logic that you will lose money upon producing it. it has been debated that the nickle should go the same way, and i agree as it would help lower our debt.

  307. In my opinion i think they should stop distributing the penny if it is costing us more money then we are gaining. Also even when they do stop we will still have pennies going through our cash system there just wont be any new ones. Its not worth losing money just for a one cent coin.

  308. Well I think the penny should stay here because prices would go up and not many people would enjoy paying more for less.

  309. I think it’s a bad idea for people, good idea for government. We the people would have to pay more while the government gets more added.

  310. I think that the penny should stay just because it has been around for so long. Without the penny you can’t make change. Like if you buy something how are you going to give back 47 cents without at least two pennies? The penny needs to stay.

  311. Yes, the penny should stay! Things would change with out it. I think the penny should stay because then everyone would transfer their ways on how they give change back. Plus the penny is important even though its only one cent.

  312. I do think the penny should stick around. But i think they need to find a way to lessen the cost to make it in order for the state to make profit. I think this due to the fact that with out the penny you wont be able to have prices like 1.99 or .99 cents.

  313. NO…..because its only one cent and you cant do much with it but save it. Another reason is because it has no value i guess in my opinion i wouldn’t want it to stick around. But i guess if you save them up they could be a bigger value in money.

    • Money is money, so it’s not something you just save. You spend it like you spend everything else. It’s worth one sent so it is worth something. Pennies are good for people that enjoy paying in exact change. *No, *it’s * can’t *I * I * Don’t start a sentence with but. * I

    • If you saved them for a very long time, they would be equal to a lot of money.I agree that they are kind of useless, you can’t buy something with one cent and if you can you could use a nickel.

  314. i think we should save the pennies you never know when you might need them and you could give them to kids with one of the gum ball machines that you put pennies in and get gum that will save the pennies.
