Canada’s government has decided to stop making pennies. People can still use them, but the country won’t be minting any new ones. Part of the reason: They cost more to make than they’re actually worth.
Could this make life easier for many Canadians? Yes. Could this lead to rounding up and possibly higher prices? Yes.
A Canadian government statement said New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Sweden and others “have made smooth transitions to a penny-free economy.” It said penny production cost $11 million a year, and that the coins, which feature two maple leaves and Queen Elizabeth II in profile, would remain legal tender until they eventually disappeared from circulation.

I do think that earth day is a important day to celebrate because our planet is getting worse by pollution, waste. I don’t do anything for earth day because I think it will be boring.

I think that they need to either be made of something cheaper or go. Maybe they can make it worth 2 cents, and just keep all the money even-numbered in the decimal range. I was thinking that if i can save my penny from 1881, in a while, it will be worth a lot. (For some reason, its not really worth much now. I DO have a silver dollar worth a fair amount, but it was my great-grandmothers, so i wont be selling it anytime soon. And, i just realized i went off topic again.) Anyway, This is a problem, and if they can even lower the cost of the pennies, then we can start to save money. Of course, it will still be spent by Obama, but hey, everyone’s debt wont be going up AS fast……
I thing that the penny should be cut I know that if you cut the penny then people would round up and not down. But cutting the the penny would save every one money in the long run. Also things that are $1.99 are know $2 and that might help people thing before they by something.
I don’t think that we really need the penny. A nickel would work just as good and it would save us money by not making more pennies. The pennies that are already made can still be used as well so i think that it would be better to get rid of them.

Personally i do not think it really matters If the penny is made and kept or not. Some people use them and some people don’t. Little kids like them for the horse rides at the stores but they are everywhere you walk. You could find them in the parking lot almost anywhere you go without even looking. I think that we should get rid of the penny if it will save us money. Not a lot of people care about the penny. If we can save a lot of money by stopping production of the pennies, then I think we should. I mean, just because we stop the production of them, doesn’t mean we have to stop using them. There are still going to be pennies out there. So, why spend 1.6 cents to make 1 cent.

Pennies are so worthless with things but then again if you have to buy something and its like $12.04 you can just give them like 4 pennies so it will be even and that kind of stuff but thats really the only good thing.. my grandpa use to collect pennies in a giant glass boat and when he died we put all the pennies in the bank for money and there was lets just say ALOT of money so you should save them.
I think that the pennies absence may make it difficult to make change and/or give pin point accurate payments, but the elimination of pennies would make everything a lot easier. You wouldn’t have all that pestering loose change, the annoyance of being paid in pennies would no longer be there, $11 million would be saved a year, etc.
I think that getting rid of the penny is a bad idea. First of all how would the government and companies decide on rounding prices if there is no penny? I think that could cause a problem. Also eliminating the penny would make a nickle more like a penny than a Nickle. Finally it could cause trade troubles because the value of the U.S dollar would be different.

I think the penny should stick around just for the lulz. It’s not as fun throwing nickels at people and saying “make it rain” when you don’t have any pennies. Pennies have to be the best thing in the world to throw when you are bored. I wouldn’t know what to do with the change I got back after making a purchase. I think pennies should stick around because they are important when buying something. I always like to use exact change to make people mad and the price is always like .73 or something where you have to use pennies. If they didn’t have them then they would have to change all the prices to make them even and that would take a long time.

I say yes and no to keeping the penny around where we live because of quite a few reasons. One reason for yes is because a lot of people collect pennies to have a hobby, and some collections are worth a lot more than they think they are, another reason is because a lot of people have activities that include the penny. The pennies should stay because if we stop making them, we might run out of them. The total U.S. population is expanding like crazy, and if they stop the production of the penny, we could eventually run out of them. Also, having the extra pennies gives us a good chance to help others out. My elementary school did the Red-Cross penny drive, where you bring in pennies to help the Red-Cross.

I think that since pennies are more expensive to make than they’re worth, we should stop producing so many of them. I don’t think that we should stop completely, because they can be collected and be worth more money in the long run. I think that they should keep the penny because they do get used a lot. What are they going to do with the 11 million they save though? In some cases it could be worth keeping but other some people think the 11 million sounds a little better. The penny probably gets used the least but it is still important.

If we got rid of pennies, stores would start selling things at a slightly higher price because they would need to round up. So if something costs $3.99 it would be raised to $4 and even though it may seem like a small change, overtime it adds up.

The penny is not even used often, yes to make the total of a bill equal when you pay but most people these days use cash and credit cards. But on the other hand, if they do take the penny away stores and restaurants should start making their prices solid numbers not like $7.99, because that’s when you get a penny back when using cash, which you don’t really need.

I believe the United States will lose the penny next year because Canada will do so well with out it. The Penny has got to go. Is getting 3 cents back really saving you that much, I think it would just be easier to pay with a nickle and give them a small tip. I think that the penny should stick around because its been around for so long and we should still have it. If we didn’t have the penny and we bought something for one cent then how would we get paid back if we gave them only five cents.
i think it is a good idea to get rid of the penny if it is costing more money to make then it is actually worth. I think Canada will be the first of many country’s to get rid of the 1 cent piece. it wouldnt make sense to keep making something that is costing your country more money to make then it is actually providing it.

The reason being…it makes things SEEM like they are cheap. If you have a product that is $2.99 it seems much cheaper than a product that is $4.00. If it seems cheaper, more people will want to buy that specific product.

I think that there is a difference between a dollar and a penny. I could be wrong tho.
I think that the penny should stay. People still pay with cash and coins so unless they get rid of all of the bills and other coins i think it should stay. When stores are putting prices on their items they can make it an odd amount like $0.57. If they took away the penny then it would be impossible to give change back. The stores would have to reprice every item in the store. Getting rid of the penny would make paying with cash much more difficult.
I think the penny should stick around because i wouldn’t know what to do without it. It has always been the lowest and seemingly most plentiful coin of all the coins that are made by the U.S. It does cost more than its worth and I am sure that if we discontinued it we would save a lot of money, but what would happen to all the coins?

That’s a good point. Making less pennies would decrease the amount of spending for its production but we still need the pennies to make exact change.
I really don’t think that making pennies is effecting the economy that much that we would need to get rid of them or stop making them. If the penny is really that expensive to make then they should have stopped minting them a long time ago. Raised prices as a result of this would just make things even harder for the average American to pay for, in my opinion there are much more important things to be worrying about than whether or not to continue minting pennies.
I think that we should keep pennies, but we should find a cheaper way to manufacture them. If we found a way to manufacture pennies with a cheaper kind or material they wouldn’t cost as much. I believe that the government should probably stop making pennies. For a couple reasons. 1) It will save money because it costs more to make it then it is worth, 2) the value of a penny will go up meaning you can sell it for more because it’s rarer. And 3) prices would be easier because they would be rounded to the nearest 5 and they would not be a fraction of a penny.

I think that the penny should be eliminated. I feel this way because it is such a low value and has hardly any worth to a consumer. That is why you constantly find them on the ground and in tip jars- nobody wants or cares about them. If they do eliminate the penny, then I think that stores need to make the cost of goods round evenly to the nearest 5 cents. That way, there is no need for pennies. For penny collectors, this would be great because all of their pennies would go up in value.

I think that the penny is an unimportant coin nowadays. There isn’t much 10 pennies can do for you in this day and age, let alone one penny. I think that they should keep making pennies. If they stop making pennies some people won’t be able to use them for what they do on a normal basis. Like what if you pay on exact change. And then if there’s no pennies left, you can’t. They should still make them but maybe not make as many as they used to.

I don’t think we should keep the penny. Based on how much one person would use it daily, it is not much. Most people would either pay with cash and get the change back. Most just pay with Credit/Debit card and would need cash or change. I think it is a waste of resources and not worth the money to make them.

Well i think the penny’s should stay because it is going to make a few things change , like some stores for instance McDonald’s. It is 1.06 for any thing from the dollar menu. I can’t tell how many times I’ve seen or found a penny just laying around somewhere, and that shows there is an overflow of them. Well if making the penny loses you money then there is no question and of course we should stop making the penny. What is the point of making money if the money cost more than what its worth? There are many other coins out there like the dime, nickel, or quarter and there are even more. Stopping the production of the penny will save on average 11,000,000 dollars a year, so it wouldn’t hurt to stop making it.

I think that in the United States the penny should be removed. The penny is such a small and useless piece of change. I think that we should still use pennies here because for instance, if you have something in a store being $5.99, how would yo be able to get change back for that if there were no pennies?
