SB 1070 is a law in Arizona which allows Arizona police to check people’s immigration status if the police have “reasonable suspicion” that the person is in the country illegally. There is a battle currently going on in the Supreme Court over who is responsible for enforcing immigration laws, the federal government or individual state governments.

I think that states and the government should be in charge because its such a big problem and either the government or the state is bound to fail and you always need a plan b. I think that Arizona should be able to check because it could be a problem and if it is going to make that big of a deal then let them take care. I think that all states should be able to check to make sure that the person/persons are legal u.s citizens
I do think that police should be able to check peoples immigration status if they are suspected of crossing the boarder. Many people die because of theses illegal immigration and many people end up paying for them because the boarder crosiers are not U.S citizens and don’t pay income taxes or other expensive. Also they could be potential terrorist and could perform some act of terror against us. I think that the federal government should be the one to make the immigration laws.

Yes they should because when someone illegally gets into the country, who knows what they would have? They may be in a drug cartel, they may have illegal weapons, they may have been a criminal in Mexico and decided to run to the U.S. so that they can commit more crimes, and if they are going to try and kill someone. I really don’t know who should be in charge of this operation, but when someone will be, they had better do the job right, or it may end up with more criminals and more damage.

Well, I think they should because we don’t know what they are capable of doing. Sometimes it’s unfair for us islanders because we came here using money. Tickets cost more than you can imagine, From Guam all the way here. So the two men need to think about other races, they cannot just think about them and their own race. Yes, I think that the Arizona police should be able to check a persons immigration status because if somebody is here and they aren’t suppose to be then they could bring drugs or some other harmful thing to the U.S. Nobody would know because they don’t even know who that person is or if they are suppose to be here. I think that if somebody is here illegally then they should be deported to where they came from because it’s not fair for the people who are citizens and need jobs. I think the state governments should be responsible for enforcing this problem because they are actually in the state and they could stop it easier.

It all depends, really. We should stop illegal immigrants at all costs if they’re crossing the border and coming into our country illegally. If the person is already in the country and there is nothing suspicious about them, but they still get accused of crossing illegally, then that would be racist and unfair. Just because someone has a different skin color doesn’t mean that they crossed illegally. If someone is only using cash for a long period of time, acting odd, and preforming in illegal activities, then yes, you could call them suspicious. In the end, I think that they should keep border patrol as strong as it is, maybe strengthen it somewhat, but don’t charge people with suspicious activity if their skin color is different from other American’s.

Like, they should be able to question someone for their I.D at certain times but they shouldn’t make a public scene against someone if the person isn’t doing anything wrong. Yes, i believe they should be able to check if they are an illegal immigrant. That is because so we don’t have them in the U.S. taking our jobs. Also they could be dangerous, for example terrorist. Also if they aren’t and they check their I.D. or what ever it’s no big deal.
Though I think that police officers have the right to check a person’s immigration status if there are suspicions, I don’t think we should over do it. If it is actually a reasonable suspicion then yes I think that they should have the right to check their ID. I think that there should be a law to check people if they act or seem like an illegal, but not just Hispanics. There are so many other illegal immigrants other than Hispanics, they just get sucked into a stereotype. If people come over the borders and come into America illegally and nothing is done they will take jobs and be able to live without any papers and it could cause a whole bunch of problems.

I think that the police should be able to check to see if they are illegal immigrants. If they aren’t able to then many illegal immigrants can come into America without getting caught. I also think that the federal government should be in charge of whats going on because they have more control of the states.

To be honest, this is a hard one. There’s many immigrants down in Arizona, I’m sure cause they’re right on the border, but once there in America they look like any other legal Latino citizen. But reasonable suspicion is not if the police see a Hispanic person and instantly believe that they are an illegal immigrant because of their ethnicity and heritage. Yes, I think they do, because defending the US is important, and being subjected to these inquiries is part of the price of being a citizen in this country. Let’s face it, people who come over the border are Mexicans. It’s not racist, it’s true. So it makes sense that the people who are Mexican or Hispanic may need their status checked. Yes, the Arizona police should be able to check a person’s immigration status if they suspect illegal immigration. That’s their job to prevent such situations and checking their status out of suspicion is just part of the deal. It’s against the law for illegal immigrants to cross the border and the police are just enforcing it.

I don’t think it would be o.k. to be checking everyone’s status, because a lot of immigrants are legal. The key part to this law is the fact that the police officer must have probable cause. I do not see this as racial profiling, because Hispanics are the only ones that can hop the border. It is not possible for a Russian or a Japanese person to get across the border by tunneling, hopping, etc. Therefore, it is not racial profiling, it’s just that the government is doing what is needed to keep America safe. Well think, once people cross the border, they don’t live life by it. Often times people move to the big cities like Phoenix and they are on the streets. The police are doing their job trying to keep the country safe, and if Hispanics don’t like it, then they can help to stop their buddies from coming in. If there was less illegal people the police wouldn’t have to profile Hispanics like they do. So if it keeps up safe, they can get over it, and if they don’t like it, they can go back to good ol’ Mexico.
Yes, I think they should check a person’s immigration status, they should do this because they might have a bad background from the past and if they come into our country, they could cause more trouble in the U.S. The border patrol should be in charge of enforcing the problem of illegal immigration. Because they are always busy guarding the border for people crossing over that they keep the U.S safe so they should be enforcing the problem.

Its not right for people to just go into a different country illegally why not just go through the thing were you become a citizen or stay out? Yes Arizona police should be allowed to check anyone they please. You never know what people are coming into this country and a lot of time, they aren’t the safest people. The Mexicans do not have a good reputation with crossing the border and I think that it should be controlled by the national government to protect all borders with Mexico and Canada.

Yes, I think the Arizona Police should be able to check a person’s immigration status. I think they should be able to because if someone looks suspicious then we should be able to check them to make sure they aren’t in the U.S. illegally. I think the federal national government should be in charge because if just one state doesn’t believe in enforcing the problem then the illegal immigrants could all get in and it won’t stop the problem of illegal immigration.
I think that should be able to because they all going to try to come over anyways. So if we check them it would lower and maybe drop the about of people trying to come over. I think that the State Government should be the ones who should do it because it’s our State! And i know they want better lives but trying to sneak over and over just give up.

Yes, I believe police should check if the immigrant entered illegally because we could get an overflow of people in the country, and therefore have an increase in unemployment rate again. The State government should be the ones in charge of the immigration laws because it is their border, so they should choose what is done by it.

No, I don’t think that they should have the power to do that. Why I think this is everybody has a right to be an American and it is racially profiling to do that to another race. I think that people who have more power in the government should be able to do that, because I think that it might be more understandable if they did it that way.

Well Gustavo i agree with you in the part where profiling occurs. The officer said he doesn’t like to be a pro-filer, but if it’s for the safety of the United States i think it’s worth it. And as long as a person has their green card (or whatever it’s called) they shouldn’t have to worry.

Well I can see where your going with this. It might be racist, but i would rather have people get deported and come in as a legal person. It’s not that hard to get a green card and not have to live life without a social security and be scared of the police. In your case, if there was a lot of coke dealers in the area selling, then I would 100% understand if they thought I was a little suspicious. If it’s so i didn’t have to worry about coke, then I wouldn’t mind. Like I say, if there was only a few cases of illegal immigrants, then that’s being racist. However, there are thousands every year, enough to get the police curious about suspicious people.

I think that the man on CNN had a point about checking if people were in the United States illegally. He said that it was somewhat racist because the police only check Hispanic people and I kind of agree. However, I don’t think there is much else we could do to keep immigrants away. I think that the federal government should worry about this because its a problem for the whole country, not just a few states.

I think they should have a reason to check someone’s immigration status only if that person is doing something suspicious because if they’re just walking or hanging out with a group of people then they shouldn’t be able too. No I do not think that the police can check someone whenever they want because its not fair to them its racist against Hispanics and then when you check them and they are a U.S. citizen then the person that checked you is going to feel very bad about them selves its like judging someone before you even know them.
No because there’s almost no way you could tell if someone is here illegally by looking at them, it would be prejudice. I think the individual states should be responsible for protecting there borders because they are responsible for there own people.
